Drunk Elephant’s haircare line has caught my attention mostly because all of their products are essential oils and fragrance-free which is just what I need for my sensitive scalp. And here is what I think about the Drunk Elephant Cocomino Shampoo and Conditioner.
Drunk Elephant Cocomino Glossing Shampoo
According to the brand, Drunk Elephant Cocomino Glossing Shampoo not only cleanses, but also cares for the hair and scalp. It is sulphate-free and uses safe coconut-derived surfactants instead, which remove excess oil and product buildup without fading colour or drying out the hair.
Ingredients: Water/Aqua/Eau, Sodium Lauroyl Methyl Isethionate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Sodium Methyl Oleoyl Taurate, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate, Coconut Alkanes, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Passiflora Edulis Seed Oil, Plukenetia Volubilis Seed Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Glycerin, Sodium PCA, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Panthenol, Glycol Distearate, Sodium Lactate, Equisetum Arvense Extract, PCA, Alanine, Arginine, Glycine, Histidine, Isoleucine, Phenylalanine, Proline, Serine, Threonine, Valine, Adansonia Digitata Seed Extract, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Seed Extract, Citric Acid, Aspartic Acid, Polyquaternium-10, Polyquaternium-7, Laureth-4, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Caprylyl Glycol, Sodium Benzoate, Chlorphenesin, Phenoxyethanol
This shampoo is formulated to be very gentle as it contains mild surfactants that give a dense foam, are gentle on the scalp and do not irritate the skin. And for extra scalp and hair care, Drunk Elephant have also added:
- glycerin and amino acids (alanine, arginine, glycine, histidine, isoleucine, phenylalanine, proline, serine, threonine, valine, aspartic acid) that moisturize, soften skin, promote healing processes, increase hair elasticity and condition
- emollients (coconut alkanes, marula, passion fruit, sacha inchi, sweet almond, rosehip, sunflower, argan oils) that not only moisturize, nourish, soften and smooth hair, adding silkiness and shine but also are an excellent alternative to silicones which brand never uses in their formulations
Its pH level is 5.5 which is just the same as the pH of the scalp and hair. As a result, the shampoo doesn’t compromise the skin’s barrier and does not cause breakage, tangles, or frizziness – find more information about how shampoo pH affects hair here.
And, of course, Drunk Elephant Cocomino Glossing Shampoo does not contain essential oils and fragrances that could trigger irritation or itching.
The first thing that caught my eye when I received both of these products was the unusual packaging. Not only is it vibrant (though I’m already used to neon shades of Drunk Elephant’s packaging), but the bottles are flat-shaped, which is not what I’ve seen before. The bottles are plastic and dispense the perfect amount of product thanks to the narrow neck.
The Drunk Elephant Cocomino Glossing Shampoo has a liquid, a bit watery consistency. It doesn’t lather much, especially on the first application (I usually shampoo hair twice for proper cleansing), but a small amount of it is enough to thoroughly cleanse the hair so the bottle lasts quite a while.
Both products have a strong fragrance of sweet almond oil which I don’t like at all. The good news is that the scent doesn’t last long on hair so does not bother during the day.
My hair gets oily very fast, so I have to wash it almost every day. And though I was afraid that the shampoo would be too heavy for me as it contains a large number of plant oils, it turned out to be just perfect. It cleanses the hair so well that makes it almost squeaky, yet manages not to overdry or tangle the strands. As a bonus, the product does not cause itching, effectively removes excess sebum and styling products buildup and does not weigh down my fine straight hair leaving it soft, smooth, nourished and voluminous.
The shampoo costs £21 for 240ml and is available at:
Drunk Elephant Cocomino Marula Cream Conditioner
Drunk Elephant Cocomino Marula Cream Conditioner is a concentrated nourishing blend of plant oils that are said to soften, smooth and detangle hair while protecting it from heat and colour fading. It also contains coconut alkanes that provide extra care and, unlike silicones, do not build up on the scalp and hair.
Ingredients: Water/Aqua/Eau, Cetearyl Alcohol, Diheptyl Succinate, Glycerin, Coconut Alkanes, Behentrimonium Methosulfate, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Butter, Sclerocarya Birrea Seed Oil, Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Coco-Caprylate/Caprate, Passiflora Edulis Seed Oil, Plukenetia Volubilis Seed Oil, Rosa Canina Fruit Oil, Adansonia Digitata Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Calophyllum Inophyllum Seed Oil, Ribes Nigrum (Black Currant) Seed Oil, Schinziophyton Rautanenii Kernel Oil, Citrullus Lanatus (Watermelon) Seed Oil, Ximenia Americana Seed Oil, Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Simmondsia Chinesis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Capryloyl Glycerin/Sebacic Acid Copolymer, Sodium PCA, Niacinamide, Panthenol, Sodium Lactate, PCA, Glycolic Acid, Pseudozyma Epicola/Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil/Camellia Japonica Seed Oil/Camellia Sinensis Seed Oil/Sunflower Seed Oil/Sweet Almond Oil Ferment Extract Filtrate, Alanine, Arginine, Glycine, Histidine, Isoleucine, Phenylalanine, Proline, Serine, Threonine, Valine, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Polyester-37, Adansonia Digitata Seed Extract, Aspartic Acid, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Seed Extract, Sodium Benzoate, Citric Acid, Tocopherol, Calcium Gluconate, Gluconolactone
This conditioner is mostly emollients-based and contains oils of marula seeds, passion fruit, sacha inchi, rose hips, baobab seeds, blackcurrant, tamanu, mongongo, watermelon seeds, Ximena, macadamia, sweet almond, jojoba, and argan which help to soften the hair, smooth the cuticles, nourish, add shine and silkiness.
Additionally, it contains moisturizing ingredients (glycerin, aloe juice, Sodium PCA, panthenol), a mix of coconut alkanes and amino acids to add body and bounce to hair, and natural alternatives to silicones that make locks shiny and help to get rid of frizziness. And here you will not find fragrances, essential oils or silicones.
The pH level of the Drunk Elephant Cocomino Marula Cream Conditioner is 3.6, which matches the pH of the hair and allows to prevent static, “close” the cuticles and make the hair more manageable and smooth.
It has a thin creamy consistency and spreads easily across the hair. I apply conditioners to the ends of my hair, keeping it far away from the roots, leave the product for 5-10 minutes and then rinse it out.
And I liked Drunk Elephant Cocomino Marula Cream Conditioner just as much as the shampoo. Not only does the Drunk Elephant’s conditioner nourishes hair and minimizes the appearance of split ends, but also makes them much more smooth, soft, shiny and healthy-looking. And though it contains lots of plant oils, it does not make hair look greasy and flat, leaving strands lightweight, silky and full.
Overall, I’m very pleased with both Drunk Elephant hair products and would definitely recommend them.
The conditioner is priced at £22 for 240 ml and is available at:
